Stairway inside the Fifth Avenue Hotel in Monessen, PA. The abandond hotel has been declared a public safety hazard and must be demolished. Mayor Lou Mavrakis said it is estimaged it will cost more than $100,000 to demolish the building with is owned by a New York man who owes $53,000 in back real estate taxes on the property.
In Monessen's heyday in the 1930's the town had 25 hotels. The only one still standing is the Fifth Avenue Hotel.
Monessen, a third-class city, faces the same problems as th other former steel towns — declining population and tax revenue after the mills shut down. The city's population has dropped to 7,600 from a high of 20,268 in 1930.
